THE VILLAGE HALL
It is difficult to separate the history of our Village Hall from that of the school.
Today they appear to form one and the same building, although this single building we know today has a rather interesting history explained more fully in the section on schooling.
From the 1950s there were various plans for the creation of a Village Hall and after a number of failed attempts and only due to a small number of very determined and persistent villagers, this finally came to fruition and the Hall was built in 1971. This is the main hall we know so well today and it is utilised as a dual purpose school hall and Village Hall.
The Village Hall has been a registered charity since 1992. Its purpose is to provide the inhabitants of the civil parish of Pott Shrigley in the County of Chester and the neighbourhood, for use for: meetings, lectures and classes and for other forms of recreation and leisure time occupation with the object of improving the conditions of life for the said inhabitants.
During the time of the sale of the school by the Lowthers and the construction of the Village Hall, the Village Hall Social Club was formed and a licensed bar was created in the former school mistress’s flat and stable in the lower ground floor of the building.
It is believed to be the only primary school in the UK with a licensed bar in the same building, but one that is strictly not operational at the same time! The Village Hall trustees act as landlord and lease the school to the Local Education Authority with running costs shared between the two.
Following recent refurbishment by a dedicated number of members, it now provides an excellent and unique village facility, meeting premises with a fully licensed bar available for social indoor activities at weekends and some evenings. Annual membership of the Social Club is exceptionally modest, and opening hours, in addition to regular Saturday late evenings and monthly Friday early evenings, may be arranged for regular or occasional functions. A kitchen is also available and there is seating for up to 80 people. For bookings phone 01625 574019 or write to Mrs O Wray, The Village Hall, Shrigley Road, Pott Shrigley, SK10 5RT.
